MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- A man was arrested Christmas Day for allegedly stealing a vehicle and gun, before being in two hit-and-run accidents in Midland. 26-year-old George Michael Zarco-Torres has been charged with aggravated robbery, theft of property, theft of a firearm, unlawful carrying of a weapon, a hit-and-run incident, and public intoxication.

According to arrest affidavits, at around 6:12 p.m., on Wednesday, December 25, the Midland Police Department responded to an Aggravated Robbery call. At the scene, officers spoke with complainants who told police they were parked in their vehicle when a man wearing Christmas print pajama pants and a black shirt tried to open the car door and shot at their vehicle before they drove away.

Reports stated that a short time later, around 6:29 p.m., MPD responded to a hit-and-run crash. Upon arrival, police found that one of the vehicles, which was unoccupied, had been reported stolen and had a tan firearm in the floorboard of the driver's seat, similar to the one reported earlier in the aggravated robbery call.

At the scene, officers met with the owner of the vehicle, who told police that it had just been stolen from his residence and he tracked the vehicle via GPS to the location of the accident.

While still on scene, officers were notified that the owner of the handgun was also calling in to report that his firearm had been taken from inside his vehicle earlier that day while he was unloading Christmas presents and that he did not realize the gun was missing until later.

According to the affidavit, troopers later arrived at the scene and told MPD that the same stolen vehicle had been involved in another hit-and-run crash.

Reports showed that later, around 6:50 p.m., MPD was also called out to a neighborhood after residents reported that a man wearing Christmas pj's had been "frantically running" through the alleyway and attempted to open several doors before running away.

Around 6:52 p.m., police responded to 2106 West Front Street, at a Stripes Gas Station after reports that a man, wearing the same pj's, was asking for help and telling people he had been drugged and kidnapped.

Police stated that upon arrival, the man, later identified as 26-year-old George Michael Zarco-Torres, had bloodshot and glassy eyes, and smelled of alcohol. Officials reported that Zarco-Torres was "extremely paranoid" and kept telling police he was drugged and kidnapped. Reports stated that Zarco-Torres seemed to be under a stimulant drug, and arrested him for public intoxication, and transported him to the Midland Police Department for further investigation.

During the investigation, Zarco-Torres told police he had come to Midland to see his girlfriend's parents and was "having an episode" and ran away. Police reported that Zarco-Torres said he thought "people were looking at him", differing from his initial statement of being kidnapped, and was "vague" when police attempted to confront Zarco-Torres about the surveillance footage, according to reports.

Due to the surveillance footage from the neighborhood and witness evidence reports, police arrested Zarco-Torres and booked him into the Midland County Detention Center for the following offenses:

  • Aggravated Robbery, a first-degree felony
  • Theft of property, a third-degree felony
  • Theft Of a Firearm, a state jail felony
  • Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon, a class A Misdemeanor
  • Hit-and-Run Accident Involving Damage to a Vehicle, a Class B Misdemeanor
  • and Public Intoxication, a Class A Misdemeanor.
