Man arrested after leading deputies on pursuit through Brewster County
BREWSTER COUNTY, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) - A theft suspect was arrested Friday afternoon after leading Brewster County Sheriff's deputies on a pursuit before crashing into another vehicle west of Alpine.
According to the Brewster County Sheriff's Office, a theft was reported to BCSO dispatch at an establishment in Marathon. The caller of the report said an unknown individual walked out of the store with several items, stating, "I won't be paying for this s***!"
The suspect then left the scene, heading west toward Alpine. BCSO deputies located the vehicle near the intersection of Highway 67 and Highway 90 and attempted to make a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle continued west into Alpine, where law enforcement from the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Alpine Police Department began to assist in the pursuit. The suspect avoided Stop Sticks that were deployed to end the pursuit before continuing to recklessly drive through town.
About four miles west of Alpine, Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson disabled one rear tire of the vehicle with a round from his 1911 pistol. A Brewster County deputy was then able to deploy another set of Stop Sticks, disabling two more tires.
BCSO said the driver of the vehicle continued to drive recklessly and showed no intentions of pulling over, swerving into oncoming traffic several times. The decision was then made to end the pursuit "as quickly and safely as possible", so deputies forced the vehicle on to the shoulder where it hit an uninvolved citizen's vehicle before coming to a stop.
The driver, identified as Justin Gabriel Cristales, was arrested and charged with Evading Arrest with a Motor Vehicle, a third-degree felony. The occupants of the uninvolved vehicle were examined by paramedics but weren't seriously injured. They did not require transport to the hospital.
